Low Tide -
5/8/2005 These pictures
were taken at low tide. The 'American pools' can be seen
in the background as large rectangular areas of blue water in
the reef. The Ocean recedes about 100 yards at low tide
and allows the exploration of the reef on foot. The
'pools' were created at different times in history. The
American pools, shown in these photos, were created to
build up the part of the island that we now live on.
they blasted out rectangular sections of the dead reef and
used the materials to extend the island. The Japanese
did something similar during WWII to build bunkers and
terrain favorable to defending the island.
